Chapter 9

Margot awoke to Radcliff and a steaming bowl of pho.

“This is like a morphine-induced dream, right?”

“Nope, it’s really me,” Radcliff said, “and this is really a hot bowl of Vietnamese rice noodles and thinly sliced beef.”

Margot looked past Radcliff to see Agent Powers and his partner sitting at a table across the room, both with chopsticks in hand and their own steaming bowl of noodles.

Powers’ partner nodded. “I’m Special Agent Connely, and I’m pretty sure no one dreams about me.”

Margot sat up, and tried some noodles. “I suppose this is one advantage to being treated here. They don’t serve this at the hospital.”

“It’s courtesy of a young waitress by the name of Bihn,” Radcliff explained. “She seems to believe she owes you her life. I don’t think anyone other than me was happier to hear you were still alive. She and the two cooks said you could eat there for life.”

Margot ate some more before saying, “I may take them up on that, this is pretty good.”

“Sounds like you earned it.”

“Not really, all I did was surrender. Trust me, at some point I regretted it.”

“I won’t tell Bihn.”

“Thanks. How did you get here?”

“We did some checking,” Powers said. “Word is that this guy is one of the good ones. We decided he might be worth the risk.”

“Plus, it increases the chances I stick around?”

“That may have factored into our decision.”

“I’ll admit it doesn’t hurt.”

“I sense a but in there.”

“Shaw is setting up another meeting with Ms. X.”

“We can talk to her…” Connely began.

“Your partner says you already did. I got the impression it didn’t go well.”

“Sure, but we don’t give up easily.”

“She might talk to me.”

“Perhaps, but maybe you could just vouch for us?”

“I could.”

“But you won’t? We did save your life. If we were in bed with the Serbs, we wouldn’t have gone to the trouble.”

“Yeah, thanks again. I suppose I should personally thank you as well, Agent Connely.”

Connely shrugged. “I figured it was implied. Besides, my partner did all the shooting.”

“Thanks anyway.”

“You’re welcome.”

“So, do you think you can trust us now?” Powers asked.

“Of course I do, but I’m not Ms. X, and it’s not as if she thinks highly of my judgment.”

“But she’ll talk to you?”

“I have a better chance than you. She might have qualms about me, but she knows I do what I say I’ll do.”

“Margot’s right,” Radcliff added. “Ms. X won’t talk to me either. I’d feel better if she stayed hidden too, but when it comes to Ms. X, she has a better chance than the rest of us.”

“What about your boss, Shaw?” Powers asked. “Those two are tight, more than just friends from what I understand.”

“I’ve got enough of my friends with targets on their backs because of me. I’m not adding another if I don’t have to.”

Powers looked at Radcliff. “What are the chances of talking her out of this?”

“Slim and none and I think slim left town.”

“You shouldn’t be talking me out of it, anyway,” Margot argued. “If the video Taisiya told me about is real, you can do a lot more damage to the Serbs than I can do.
